Campaigns. It is important that I continue to know the strength of feeling on an issue and I prefer to respond to every inquiry, but the sheer size of campaign correspondence means that it is hard to justify to the tax payer the cost and time taken for individual written replies, so regrettably I will no longer reply to every item of campaign correspondence.  I will  post a response to the campaign on the "Responses to campaigns" page of my website.

I am sorry to do this, as it is rather impersonal, but can see no other way of maintaining a good service for all my constituents unless I approach campaigns this way.

Advancement of Religion

Thank you for taking the time to email me concerning the National Secular Society's campaign to remove 'the advancement of religion' as a charitable purpose.

As a person of no faith, I do however recognise the positive role that faith plays in communities. However, to clarify Charity Commission guidance states that:

It is not enough that an organisation does something in the name of religion in order for it to be a charity advancing religion. It has to be shown that the aim of the organisation is to advance the religion in a way that is for the public benefit, and not to further some other, non-charitable, aim.

In addition, as the advancement of religion was only set as one of the charitable purposes in the Charities Act 2011 I think it is unlikely to be reviewed so soon.
