Today I met with Professor Steve Field, the Deputy National Medical Director of the NHS to Totnes and with those affected by homelessness and the people trying to help improve services.
We visited the Revival Life Ministry to talk with some of those who are sleeping rough in the area. We discussed how to improve access to healthcare and what can be done to ensure that the homeless are looked after in places they can easily access.
We then met with the Drug and Alcohol Team for Devon and Nicki Glassbrook – Health Inequalities Manager for the area. Our meeting focussed on what can be done to make sure the services and housing for those with drug and alcohol problems in Totnes are accessible and able to help people in the best possible way.
I do not wish to see another preventable death in Totnes and I am glad that all the relevant organisations are committed to working together to secure the right help for people needing accommodation, healthcare and a future that stretches beyond the winter months.
I realise that there is not a one size fits all solution to this problem and I will be working closely with others to offer those who are vulnerable in our community the help they want and need.
