Peninsula Deanery

A meeting with Peninsula Deanery; this was an opportunity to hear about the staffing problems facing Primary Care across Devon and Cornwall; a particular challenge at a time when GPs are at the forefront of designing services for patients. There is an increasing shortage of Primary Care doctors which will be made even more challenging as GPs make the necessary change from a 3 year training rotation to one that will last 4 years. It was good to hear that GP trainees are interested in getting further training in how to commission and design care pathways but it is clear that the focus for medical training will need to shift to training more doctors for the areas where their skills are needed rather than overtraining doctors in specialties for which there are no vacancies.
