South West Maritime Archaeology Group

Our maritime heritage owes so much to the amateur archaeologists from SWMAG. Of just over 60 protected wrecks off our coast, three lie within a short distance of Gara Rock. One of the most spectacular vantage points on the coast path is from the Gara Rock Hotel which now hosts a plaque describing these wrecks. It was wonderful to meet Ron Howell and the team which retrieved an extraordinary haul of gold coins, now saved for the nation in the British museum.
